Le Vol et la premiere semaine a Paris

This may not have as many pictures as you would like. I am using free Wi-Fi (pronounced 'wee-fee') at a playground by the Eiffel Tower. I'll put up a lot of pictures when I have more time on the internet!

Today we finally checked out of the hotel! The boys were sad because it meant no more pool, but on the other hand they were excited because we were finally going to France. We checked out of our room, only to move all of our suitcases to a room next door so Timmy could take a nap. There was no way I was going to risk flying out at 10 PM and not have him take a nap. I enjoyed some peace and quiet and some final internet time. Who knows when I would have internet access again. We are to be in our temporary apartment until April 18, and I don't imagine that there will be the internet hooked up there temporarily. Doug did some pretty impressive luggage Tetris in the car and I'm happy to say that we fit it all in the car! We left the hotel around 2:00 PM and headed towards the airport. We went to the Dulles Towne Center which is a big mall close the the airport so we could walk around and ride the train and carousel at the mall. Also, that way we beat the traffic heading west. After returning our rental car we took a shuttle to the airport. (yes, this all our stuff)
We made it to the airport around 5:30 and prepared for the process of checking in and going through security. Although we were flying Delta, we actually had to check in at Air France. It seemed that everyone else checking in was speaking French and the boys were very excited to hear it. We only had to wait a little while in the security line because there was a separate line just for families. Finally! I'm so glad that airports are catching on! I didn't feel totally rushed with hoards of people waiting behind us. We were at our terminal about 3 hours early and we let the boys play and walk around. Timmy was good natured and ended up being a little punch-drunk giggly. When we boarded Timmy and I got the window seat and Doug and the boys took the middle. Thomas fell asleep before we even reached 9000 feet. He slept for more than half the flight. The attendants passed around little earplugs and sleep masks. Matt put on a sleep mask and he even slept for a few hours. Timmy, on the other hand, held out until after midnight. He finally fell asleep when the overhead lights were turned out and when I learned how to turn off the TV. (Each seat had its own TV in front and there were even video games to play. Matt and Thomas really liked that!)

They also served dinner. Let me share the menu:

Appetizer: Couscous à la provençale et saumon

Main: Fricassée de poulet sauce suprême, riz sauvage, julienne de carottes et courgettes jaunes.

OR

Pâtes pennne à la bolognaise

Fromage

Gâteau à l'orange et aux canneberges

BIENVENUE À FRANCE!!! When was the last time you had a meal like that on an airplane?!

I even got to sleep a little. Well, enough to make my contacts uncomfortable. Doug on the other hand didn't sleep much because he was wedged in between two sleeping boys.

After landing I prepared myself to stand in line for the passports check. Once again we were pleasantly surprised when one of the workers opened up the gate for just us and let us cut in line. Maybe they cater to families of tired children. I wouldn't want to be in line with a bunch of tired whining kids. Anyway, kudos to the French for their airport customer service! Who would have thought!

We quickly found our luggage and not so quickly waited for our stroller and boy's car seats. (yeah, we always take our stroller with us and have it tagged at the terminal gate. So this time, it was not waiting for us when we got off the plane and we (well, Doug) had to haul Timmy and carry-ons through the airport until we got our stroller. Thank goodness for bags and bags of fruit snacks!) I have to say that I have always hated the Charles de Gaule Airport. Every time I've been here I was so lost and confused. (Even when I spoke french). Maybe it was because all of the other times I was making a connecting flight. Anyway, things are labeled better and bigger. They even have a nifty shuttle train. So I was pleasantly surprised once again. We met one of Doug's co-workers and our shuttle driver. It was a long drive from the airport to the apartment. All three boys fell asleep. The driver pointed our various land marks. Matt was excited as we drove by IKEA. But I'm pleased to say that he was very excited as we drove past the Eiffel Tower. Thomas even woke up briefly to see it as we drove by. It was weird to see that Paris is not all pretty as people expect it to be. There is a lot of the old and pretty mixed in with the brand new and shiny along with the run down and graffiti written. There were a lot of places where there was a ton of garbage just piled up next to the road. I'm still amazed at the drivers here. Especially the motorcycles. They seem to have their own rules. In fact at our street corner there are five streets that intersect. And none of them have a stop sign, so who has the right of way?

Friday, April 2

We arrived at our TLQ (temporary living quarters) and it is quite nice. (Not as nice as our permanent apartment will be, but way better than a hotel). I'm happy to say that we live right across the street from a boulangerie!

We also live around the corner from the Eiffel Tower. If the building in front of us wasn't there, we'd be able to see the Eiffel Tower from our living room. So we walk out the front doors and go to the end of the street, then turn left and...voila, there it is!

I'm getting ahead of myself. Upon our arrival, the boys had to go to the bathroom. They ran in and found the bathroom. Here in France there is a bathroom (with the bath/shower) and another room with the toilet (pretty smart if you ask me). Well, what the boys found was the bidet. Then Timmy discovered the bidet and that he could turn on the water and fill it up and splash around. So my question is, why wasn't the bidet in the same room as the toilet? Isn't that what it's for? In any case, we have to keep the door to the bathroom closed at all times because any time Timmy sees it open he runs in and tries to turn on the bidet.

Saturday April 3

We went walking around and grocery shopping. There is a grocery store down then street about 5 minutes and it's right next door to a McDonalds. (and a GAP and H&M). We've been doing a little grocery shopping each day carrying whatever we and the stroller can hold. I'll have to get used to making my menus and shopping lists accordingly each day. I do love grocery shopping, so I don't mind. I wonder, however, it if is going to make my food budget more expensive. We'll see. While at the store I saw “facination” (the french translation for “Twilight”), so I bought it. Doug was worried that he would loose me into a book for the whole weekend. However, reading in french right now gives me a headache. I'm not at the point yet where I can read and automatically know what it says so I'm still kind of translating things in my head. Although I practically have “Twilight” memorized, I'm using it as a learning experience and looking up words that I don't know (even though I know what is going on in the book). So it is slow reading right now. We have been walking around the Eiffel Tower grounds. Today it was cold and rainy. The boys enjoyed puddle jumping. They quickly learned the phrase, “Attention la boue!”

Sunday April 4

Pâques

Today was Easter. I haven't really had some time to prepare for a nice Easter meal, so we had cheese pizza for lunch and crèpes for dinner. We had a nice lesson on why we celebrate Easter and talked about the Atonement and the Ressurection. What a wonderful gift our Saviour has given us. I'm grateful for the power of the Atonement and the miracle of forgiveness. Christ really did atone for our sins and he knows how we are feeling. Whatever it is that we are going through, He has already gone through it so we don't have to suffer. I hope my kids learn this and know that they are never alone. Although today was General Conference (a worldwide satellite broadcast for the Church), our chapel wasn't able to receive the satellite. The closest place it was being broadcast was by Versailles and since we don't know our way around (and don't have the internet to figure it out), we opted to have a lesson here and talk a big walk around the Eiffel Tower. I also took a walk to find various patisseries with chocolate sculptures in the windows so I could post them here, but alas, even la Petite Chocolaterie didn't have a window display.

lundi Pâques

Today is a holiday in France. So Doug will go to work tomorrow and fill out paperwork and get things prepared for us to get ID's and a bank account. We went shopping once again and now everyone is taking naps. We finally figured out where to take our garbage and how to work the washer machine.

I am reminded of lundi Pâques in 1998 when my mission companion and I wanted to make crèpes. We had completely forgotten that all the stores were closed and we needed to have our Nutella. So we went Nutella contacting. (asking people if there was a store open to buy some). I'm happy to say that Nutella contacting works 100% of the time if you want to find a new investigator! The woman that helped us also started taking the missionary discussions. I wonder whatever happened to her. I went home a month later, so who knows.

Today we went shopping once again and then to a playground. There were a few little kids around Timmy's age and then some other girls playing soccer (with a pink ball). I hope that the other moms didn't think that my boys were crazy loud American boys (well, they are, but we're working on that). I try to teach the boys that we need to talk in french when we are out and about because it is more polite. I think that Matt will learn quite a bit once he gets to school.

Tuesday, April 6

This is my first day going solo. Doug went to work. It would have been much better this morning if we all slept in, but Matt needs to practice getting up earlier. He will start school on Monday and he needs to be at the bus stop around 7:30 AM. (that's early for all of us). I talked to his school and found out that once a week they have a swimming class. Matt is excited and I am grateful that he had the opportunity to enjoy the pool at the hotel. Of course, he can't swim without floaties. I guess he'll learn. I did find out that he needs to have a Speedo swimsuit. This morning we went to H&M, GAP Kids, and Monoprix and none of them have Speedos for kids. So, where in the world do I buy a Speedo for kids?! Help! While in the states I always avoided taking all three boys to the store. It was such a nightmare. Now it's unavoidable. This morning we went to the store to get things to make pizza. Timmy kept trying to grab everything in sight and I even caught him trying to gnaw on a head of broccoli. Thankfully I only got a few things and it was for a good cause (pizza) so the boys helped out. Still, I think I'll save the grocery shopping until the early evening when I can leave all of them home. Then again, it sure it nice having the stroller carry the groceries for me. I invested in one of those mommy clips to carry multiple bags at a time and hang it on the stroller bar. So far so good. This afternoon we are going to play on a playground that is next to the Eiffel Tower. There is a huge area with 3-4 play areas, a carousel, go-kart riding, and a place to play basketball. Doug wants to play basket ball to show them how we really play in USA. I'm not quite sure that Church ball counts! Anyway, he's excited to know there is somewhere to play.

That is all for now. I hope all is well with you in the states. Until next time when I mooch off of some free “Wee-Fee”...Au revoir.

"30 Days of Hotel Life"

Every once in a while I kept thinking of the number of times we did various things while stuck here in the hotel and 'The 12 days of Christmas' song came to mind. So I thought I'd make a tally of things we did and make up a little jingle. Sing along with me if you'd like!

I'm leaving on a jet plane...

Some of you may be wondering why I was stuck in a hotel for a month in DC. (Just in case you haven't been following along on Facebook). We were originally supposed to fly out on March 11th, but our visas weren't ready. With no fault of ours, things were delayed and we were told repeatedly, "they'll be ready tomorrow." We kept hoping for them to be done quickly and kept moving our airplane tickets back a few days at a time. Anyway, I am happy to report that we got our visas today. We actually moved our flight up a few days and we are flying out Thursday night. (Yes that's April Fool's Day, and no, I'm not joking). The flight leaves around 10 PM and we arrive on Friday around 11 AM Paris time. We are hoping that the boys will sleep most of the night. We shall see. I think the seats all have little TV's in them. We are going to a temporary apartment for a couple weeks and then actually go to our place. I'm perfectly fine with that because the temporary apartment is a couple blocks away from the Eiffel Tower! And around the corner from a Boulangerie! Things are looking better. Now if only it would stop raining in Paris!

Being tourists (in our own town)

A castle at the Smithsonian. I know these aren't cherry blossoms, but they're pretty.

In a way it's a good thing we're still in VA instead of Paris. There have been some very nice days outside. Every time I check the weather for Paris it's raining. I will gladly welcome the blue skies and warm weather. We have taken advantage of it by going to the Zoo and the National History Museum in DC. Both have been very nice days. Perhaps if we're here long enough, we'll head over to the Museum of America History and the National Building Museum.

It's nice that Matt reads so well. It makes a trip to the museum more interesting. Perhaps he will be like his father and read about things at a museum (unlike me who barely pauses as I walk by). Don't get me wrong, I like going to museums. It's just that there are some things that catch my eye more than vampire bats or the history of some fossil or airplane.

We bought Timmy a harness. I figured that he needed to get used to it before Paris. We tested it out today. I slipped it on him while he was distracted by something on a TV. After that he didn't seem to notice it. He was intrigued by the things on the TVs on the floor.
He loved to be able to touch things. And he even managed to find something that had a button and he pushed it over and over again. That boy loves to push buttons.

Last Saturday we went to the National Zoo. It was a very nice day and therefore very crowded.

D.C through the eyes of a child

My parents got the boys digital cameras for Christmas. I thought it would be fun for the boys to take pictures of Paris with their own cameras. The cameras don't have a flash, so some of their pictures may be hard to see. Or they may be a bit unfocused because they need to hold the camera still. I let the boys practice while we went to DC. Here are some pictures from the National History Museum.
Up close and personal with dinosaur teeth.
Up close and personal with mountain lion teeth.

A tiger getting ready to pounce. Actually it looks like it is moving from the way the boys took the picture.

We have more on another camera, but we accidentally forgot to bring the USB cord for the computer. So those pictures will have to wait until our stuff arrives via slow boat.

My life in a hotel

We have been in a hotel since March 2, 2010. With 3 kids. Thankfully it is fully paid for and we got a suite with a living/kitchenette area, and two bedrooms each with their own bathroom. It seems like we have more space than we did in our 687 sq ft apartment in SLC. As potentially horrible as it could be with 3 kids, the boys are holding up well and they all sleep just fine in the same room. We have a makeshift wall between the boys bed and Timmy's bed. The couch cushions help block Timmy's view.
Matt and Thomas share a king sized bed. The 4th night here Thomas rolled off the bed and whacked his head on the corner of the side table. After carrying him in to our room I noticed that the back of his head was bleeding. There wasn't too much of a goose egg, but there was a cut. So I called the on call nurse to figure out if he needed an ER visit. I woke him up every couple hours throughout the whole night asking him questions. (neurological checks), and hoping that he wouldn't throw up (a sign of a concussion). He was fine the next day and slept just fine. I, however, did not.

We've spent a lot of time at Chuck E Cheese. The weather was a bit rainy for the first week. I treated the boys to cotton candy with the tickets they earned. The next morning Thomas helped himself to a lot of cotton candy and threw up for the rest of the morning. His cold also got worse and we ended up borrowing a nebulizer to give him breathing treatments.

It's not all bad. We are allowed a daily allowance for food and therefore we eat out alot. I thought it would be a lot of fun not having to come up with what to cook and I don't have to cook it. However, with a 20 month child in tow, it is a lot more difficult to go out to eat in nice places. we have gotten a babysitter a couple times so we could go out for an adult dinner. The boys have really enjoyed Olive Garden. And they were so excited to get Happy Meals because there were Star Wars toys. I think that the boys have eaten macaroni and cheese just about everywhere we have gone. In the end, they both still agree that my homemade mac & cheese is the best. One result of going out so often is that Timmy has now mastered using a straw. He's very pleased with himself. Also a result of using a straw is that he has also tried his first taste of root beer. He loves it. It's funny to see his little eyebrows go up when it is something that he likes.

The boys like being stuck in a hotel. They like going to the pool. I have to admit that it is helping them to be better swimmers and less afraid of the water. Matt has improved so much since last summer. He is now willing to blow bubbles, and get water in his face. It's too bad we never lived in an area with a pool (or I was never willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for a pool pass). I guess the longer we're here, the better he will be. I think that the school in France does swimming every once in a while. The boys met a French Canadian family at the pool and they got very excited when they heard them speaking French. They are learning new french words every day.
The boys have learned how to entertain themselves in a hotel room. They play hide and seek. Thomas needs to learn to stay in one place while counting. The two older boys really enjoy hiding and let Timmy do the seeking. The boys hide under the covers and then jump out and Timmy giggles. They also play cars. We've only lost one under the refrigerator. Doug has hooked up the PS3 so now they can also play video games.
Timmy discovered the kitchen utensils and he plays with them. The other two boys also took his lead and they have used them for lightsaber duels and they pretend that the pasta ladle is a dinosaur with big teeth that likes to eat cars. I have yet to get out the Lego sets I have packed and all the other Little People toys. I'm hoping to hold them in reserve until Paris.
Peek!

Every once in a while I will look at the pictures of our apartment in Paris, or Google the street view. It does help me to keep looking forward to it. One day as I was "walking" down the Champs Elysee's, I started thinking of the song. So I googled it and played it for the boys. We learned some of the words and then got a little silly.

My boys have some interesting dance moves. Play the song in the video and then play the dancing video at the same time. I don't have sound on the camera.

Matt and I do "Mommy and Matt school" every day. I took him out of school on the 9th thinking that we would fly out on the 11th. He reads a 'Magic Tree House" book everyday and I have him write a report about it. (what happened, what he learned, where it took place, and his favorite part). I actually had 6 new books being held in reserve for when we got to Paris, but he read all of those and we had to go to the library to get more. We do math time with story problems. We have spelling tests. I've found a couple web sites where kids can play educational games online. I really don't know how people home school their kids. Then again, maybe they're a lot more organized than me.

At the end of the day, all of my boys are still pretty tired.
Hopefully we're out of here soon. Everyday I think of my fresh baguette. I probably ought to use this extra time to brush up on my french. I'm hoping that it will all come back shortly after getting to Paris. About a month ago, I sat down and watched "la Belle et la Bete" en francais. (Beauty and the Beast). The boys even sat down to watch it with me and they watched the whole thing with minimal explanations. I found that after watching it, I was thinking in French the rest of the evening. There is hope that it will come back!

Chuck E Cheese

I have discovered Chuck E Cheese as a place to go when people need to release energy on a bad weather day and also on days when I need to get refill after refill of Diet Coke. It's been fun watching Timmy learn how to play there. I used to have alot of really funny pictures of Timmy on my phone when he was little, but my phone broke and then they were lost. Picture an 8 month old with his little face squished up against the clear plastic window of a play area. It was hilarious. Oh well. Here are some pictures of our most recent visit.

No, that is not Timmy in between the boys. We went with a friend.

Happy 10th Anniversary to us!

Ten years ago today I was married for time and all eternity to the man I love. Some days the time has gone by really fast. Someone told us recently, "You look too young to have been married for 10 years."Years ago I was planning on finding a babysitter and taking a cruise with just the two of us for the big 10 year anniversary. But then we got a position in Paris. While we are still in a hotel, and eating out all the time, it's not the same. We still got a babysitter for the evening and were able to enjoy ourselves. And we will be in Paris, so I can't complain. Maybe we'll still take a cruise, but on the Mediterranean instead. Does anyone want to come over to be our babysitter?!

I am grateful that we are moving to Paris. I am very excited to get back to the French people and the wonderful bread. I am also looking forward to a different way of life which will include less processed food and more walking. Although things are stressful in order to get there, I am still very excited.

I am very proud of Doug for all that he has accomplished. When I got to visit his work for his farewell party, people had nothing but praise for him. He is a hard worker and very dependable. When he says he's going to do something, he will. And he will do it very well. I do love that he is such a great example to many around him. I hope that I can raise my boys to be as dependable, hard working, and trustworthy as he is. I never did get to thank his mom for doing such a wonderful job raising him. I wonder how she did it so I can do the same. Thank you to everyone who has been such a great influence on my husband in order to make him the wonderful man he is today.

Happy Birthday Matt!

Today is Matt's 7th birthday. Wow! Seven years ago I became a mom. I can't really say that it's gone by quickly. Tonight Matt is having a sleep-over with a friend, and then tomorrow he's having a video game birthday party. He just wanted to invite over a couple friends from his class and have pizza, cake and ice cream, and play video games for 2 hours. Sounds more like a play date than a birthday party. Works for me! He's requested a light saber birthday cake this year.
I love how much Matt has grown up in the past year. He's learned so much at school. I love watching him pick up books and settling in a chair to read them. (he even reads in his head, so it's nice and quiet). I like having him read things and then ask questions about them. He really wants to understand more and more. A simple, "because" doesn't suffice anymore. He's becoming a good friend to his peers and his brothers. He teaches Thomas how to play video games and they are just about equals now. He loves to make Timmy laugh and smile. He really is very gentle with his baby brother.

He is a big helper and will gladly help with the laundry and gets excited when I let him help load the dishwasher. Someday when he's able to reach the faucet life will be great! (more for me than for him!). He's excited to move to France and we keep learning more and more french words. I think he'll adapt quite nicely.

Matt is becoming Dad's boy.He will sit by his side and play video games together. He is learning to love sports and will watch them with Doug anytime they're on TV. In fact the other day Doug was watching a soccer game, and then went out. Another soccer game came on and Matt recorded it for Doug (just in case he wanted to watch that one too). He loves sports and Star Wars. He is all boy.

Happy Birthday Thomas!

Thomas turned five years-old today. Five seems so old, but when I look at him I still think he's around 3 sometimes (not from how he acts but from how cute he is!) This past year Thomas has been going to preschool and really learning a lot. He's working hard to be able to write his letters and numbers to be prepared for Kindergarten.

This past year Thomas has become even more car savvy (if that were possible for someone his age). He developed a love for Ford Mustangs. He can also identify almost every make and model of car we see. If he sees one that he doesn't know then he asks about it and remembers it for the next time. He has a great memory for things. He still has a great smile and I love to see his little dimple. He is very theatrical and can turn on the charm (or the crying) at a moment's notice. He's been a great big brother to Timmy and he's learned to play quite well with Matt. Thomas has become quite good at playing video games with his older brother.

Thomas did not want to have a birthday party. The only person he wanted to share his birthday with was hos older brother. He did, however, want to go to IKEA and play in the play area. So we made the 45 minute drive and we ate lunch, played in the play area, got ice cream, picked up Doug at work, went to Pizza Hut for dinner and then came back and had cake and ice cream. We went out later and got some balloons as well. He requested a Monster Truck cake.
I made it by baking 2 loaf pans and cutting one of the loaves in half for the cab. I hooked them together with frosting and trimmed it a little. Then I made some fondant ( I needed to make it more red. Once again Thomas has a pinkish car for a birthday cake), and covered it with fondant. Then I cut out flames and painted them orange with food coloring. The final and most appreciated touch were the chocolate donuts for the big wheels. It was a huge hit.
